Whipworms: Whipworms are a parasite of dogs that live in the colon. It can be challenging to confirm a diagnosis. Some dogs with smaller numbers of worms will not have any problems or signs. However, more severe infestations can cause bloody, mucous diarrhea. Dogs that test positive and are not treated for severe infections can cause bloody diarrhea, weight loss, dehydration, blood loss, and even death.

Although there are reports in the medical literature of human infections, whipworms are not considered officially infectious to people. However, there are reported cases of chronic diarrhea in humans that have been eventually connected to a whipworm infestation.
