“The Eyes Have It”
Our veterinarians have been taking care of pets’ eyes for many years. Ophthalmology is the treatment of eye conditions like corneal ulcers or injuries, glaucoma, and cataracts. We use both surgical and medical interventions to save or, in some cases, restore your pets’ vision. And when we feel like your pet is best treated by an ophthalmologist (specialist), we have a tremendous and long-term association with one of the best in the country!
Just like us, your pets need healthy eyes. After all, they do not have any to spare. At Rainbow City Pet Clinic, we work hard to prevent ocular emergencies by understanding the different conditions related to different breeds or species. It is so hard to know when your dog or cat’s vision is blurry or if they are painful in their eyes. Often, we cannot tell how bad they felt until we’ve corrected their issues and found them acting like a puppy or kitten once again.
Conditions that we treat include:
- Inflammation and conjunctivitis/redness
- Glaucoma/increased pressure
- Corneal injuries
- Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca or Dry Eye
- Eyelid and eyelash injuries or abnormalities
- Third Eyelid Prolapse/Cherry Eye
- Cataracts
- Sudden blindness
At Rainbow City Pet Clinic, we use a variety of diagnostic tools to help us have a clear understanding of your pet’s issue. We are blessed to have the use of a Tonopen to diagnose ocular pressure without a referral. We use special equipment for more complete fundic exams allowing us to see the retina and optic nerve in the back of the eye. We use Schirmer-Tear testing and fluorescein dye testing to help us make an early and accurate diagnosis in an effort to be preventative in our eye care for your pet.
Warning signs of eye issues:
- Pain that can be caused by loss of appetite, depression, or pawing at the eye
- Squinting
- Dilated pupil
- Cloudiness in the eye
- Red or bloodshot eyes
- Loss of vision
Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to saving your pet from experiencing pain, suffering, and possibly blindness. If your pet is experiencing any of the warning signs listed above,
