Ehrlichiosis

Rainbow City Pet Clinic veterinarians are the best reference, with expert knowledge of the parasites your pet and family can be exposed to in our region. Providing continuous protection against harmful parasites is not only essential in protecting the overall health of your dogs and cats but also for humans, especially kids.

Now that dogs and cats are treated like family members, we share our home with them. So it is even more significant to keep your fur family members on monthly parasite prevention to ensure that you reduce the risks associated with the transmission of parasitic diseases from pets to people. A common misbelief is that ticks can be less relevant in the winter months; however, they often survive in your house for those months. As our region’s weather continues to change, we notice ticks are in our environment year-round.

Rainbow City Pet Clinic recommends and offers several brands of year-round parasite prevention to protect your fur and human family members. We have our opinions of the BEST products for your pet so let us help you with a recommendation!

Ehrlichiosis: A tick bite can transmit this organism to your dog with as little as 3 to 6 hours of contact from an attached feeding tick. Some infections are subclinical and do not show any symptoms. Dogs with the disease usually present with fever, depression, anorexia, and weight loss. Sometimes there are enlarged lymph nodes, bruising, and a bloody nose. Sometimes there are neurological and ocular symptoms related to this disease, as well as vomiting and diarrhea.

Some species of Ehrlichia cause polyarthritis, and dogs are reluctant to move and have stiff and swollen joints. This disease is less well-defined in cats, but fever, depression, weight loss, anorexia, joint pain, and bruising can be evident if you have even the slightest suspicion that your pet has symptoms and there are known tick bites. Immediate treatment is crucial for the best outcomes.

People are also affected by Ehrlichiosis, but get the disease from a tick bite and not directly from their pets.
