Our veterinarians specialize in preventative dental care, cleaning, dental fracture repair, and dental extractions with bone grafting. Dental health is an essential part of your pet’s overall health. Most veterinary clinics recommend that your pets have a dental done annually, but our team of veterinarians recommends that dentals only be done when necessary.
Our doctors at Rainbow City Pet Clinic recommend your pet’s teeth and gums are checked at least once a year during your pet’s yearly prevention exam. Untreated dental disease debilitates your pet’s immune system and leads to more severe issues with your pet’s heart, kidneys, and liver.
During a dental cleaning, plaque and tartar are removed from your pet’s teeth, and the health of the entire mouth (tongue, gums, lips, and teeth) is assessed. A thorough dental cleaning can be accomplished only while the pet is under general anesthesia. Anesthesia allows our veterinarians to thoroughly inspect the teeth and remove the tartar and bacteria under the gum.
Your pet’s teeth may need to be examined sooner if you observe any of the following problems:
- Bad breath
- Broken or loose teeth
- Extra teeth or retained baby teeth
- Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
- Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Pain in or around the mouth
- Bleeding from the mouth
- Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth
